Note: a few steps were necessary to get as far as I did:įirst, find it under "Storage controllers" in the Windows 7 Control Panel, and update the drivers (let it search for them on the Web, which means Windows Update). Performance is okay: the Windows Experience disk performance index with my drive is 5.9, which is the same as when the drive's connected to the mobo's SATA controller. I can, however, boot from a single drive plugged into the controller, which runs in "Pass-thru" mode. SATARaid5 seems happy with the adapter, but the POST code never displays its message, and Ctrl-S & F4 don't work. The brand new Dell Inspiron 620's BIOS was also two levels out of date, so I also updated it from level A00 to A02. I also installed the latest drivers (from Windows Update), and downloaded and installed SATARaid5 tool from The (brand new) adapter's BIOS was way backlevel (as were the drivers on the enclosed CD), so I downloaded the latest from, and updated the BIOS to (latest) version 7.7.03 (from SiI3132_BIOS_7703\r7703.bin). The adapter seems to work, and I can boot from it in "Pass-Thru" mode, but its POST code doesn't run, and Ctrl-S & F4 aren't recognized. I want to set up RAID 1 (mirrored) drives (matched Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.12), so I bought an $18 Syba Sil3132 PCI-e adapter. This behavior reminded me of a driver issue I had with my old motherboard and its Marvell SATA controller when I had first upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7, and I had managed to solve it by using newest drivers. I also need to report that I have my motherboard's most recent BIOS version (F5)Īnd all newest drivers for the rest of the hardware (which is mostly brand new), including Intel's chipset and Rapid Storage. When I unplug the HDDs, the performance comes backĪfter a lot of failed attempts (Flashing the BIOS to different versions accordingly changing the drivers, using older drivers), unfortunately nothing worked.

Unfortunately, while Windows 10 recognized the controller, found the driver for it and reported that the device works correctly, when I plug my external HDDs, Windows 10 starts to choke and become unusable.

I bought the Silicon Image Sil 3132 controller and was happy to see that it was immediately seen by the motherboard and BIOS.

I recently upgraded my PC with new 6th gen Intel i7 with a newer motherboard (Gigabyte Z170-HD3P), which unfortunately, like most newer motherboards, has only 6 SATA internal connectors and none e-Sata connectors, so I had to buy an external add-on SATAĬontroller in order to plug in my external HDDs.
